Formatting and partitioning a new HD

Hello everyone

One of my four HDs has become U/S and I wish to replace it with a new Hitachi 250gb SATA. The connections on my mobo are SATAs, and I use IDE/SATA connectors. With the new drive this will not be necessary.

So, how please, do I go about Formatting and partitioning the new HD. Once partitioned I can transfer the information on the old disk.

Hi, when you install XP on your system you will be prompted to partition your HD and format the partitions.

Pop in your Win2K or XP CD and reboot the computer. Your computer sould say 'press any key to boot from CD.' If you do not see this, you may have to go into the BIOS setup (by pressing the 'del', 'F2' or 'F12' key upon rebooting) and make sure that your CD is selected as a boot device. This option is normally found in the "Advanced BIOS Setup' menu option in the BIOS screen.

This depends on your final goal.

If you are just using the new drive for data you can format it with Disk Management or format and partition with GParted.

If you intend to recreate your old drive you need to "clone" it. The manufacturer usually has this tool available.

I believe that you can "clone" with the trial version of Acronis.

If you intend to wipe everything and start from scratch then the reinstallation of XP would work.
