Cpu hanging, accompanied by beep
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that while under strain (say if I'm playing winamp, running firefox, and try to browse the harddrive at the same time), winamp (or windows media player or Realplayer) would stutter, distorting the audio so that several sounds would play at the same time, all but one late (sounding like a download sound from the Matrix for lack of a better explanation). Around the same time I downloaded the demo for Call of Duty 4, and the loading screen with the mission briefing did the same thing for about half of it before sorting it out and working correctly for about the other half. While in COD4 there were no other programs running.
More recently, and increasingly common, my system will entirely stop working for several seconds, accompanied by a hardware beep of some kind, but that does not sound like the BIOS startup beeps. While that's going on it seems like the cpu (an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300) is just on strike, everything hangs including keyboard and mouse, and after a second or two it will start working again.
After the first problem I tried to System Restore but by the time I thought of it apparently the earliest restore point was after the problem began, erasing the one I had made recently and before the problem. Oops.
