Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
right this is a little weird and i can find any other info on google.
my computer has randomly been slow recently, sometimes it will work seamlessly then suddenly it will bog down.
i have the extender resource monitor enabled and that says im in the red on disk uasage, all i am doing is web browsing (when the computer bogs down).
now i though it could be a virus so i went to do a virus scan, i always stop everything when scanning for viruses, i even disable my internet. anyway 2 times this has happened, i right-click the icon in the bottom right, click disable and my computer restarts (it doesnt shut down, its like i pressed the little reset button on the front of the computer)
i couldnt boot up for a while after it just got stuck on the bootup screen,
my computer is:
windows media centre
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+
3072MB RAM
im using windows firewall
what ive tried:
1. virus scan (with the internet on, using avg free)
2. spybot, ad-aware,
im stuck as to what the problem is

Re: Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
What were the results of your virus/spyware/adware scans? Clear? (I gather that the databases for all three are up to date.)
What programs do you have running on startup? This can be checked via Start, Run, msconfig, Startup tab. Or, a better tool is Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (attached).
Just as a shot in the dark, make sure that any NET/WAKE settings are disabled in the bios (Wake on LAN, Wake on Modem Ring, etc).
Windows Firewall has been known to do strange things on some machines. Have you considered using another Firewall? Comodo is a free, full function Firewall and it works very well.

Re: Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
on startup i have:
Startup (user)
nothing
Startup (common)
Extender Resource manager
HKLM /run
AVG7_CC
BluetoothAuthenticationAgent
BtTray -something to do with my bluesoliel bluetooth application
CHotkey
Epson Stylus DX4000 series
GrooveMonitor
NvCplDaemon
nwiz
readericon
recguard
RTHDCPL
TkBellExe
HKCU /run
ctfmon.exe
MSMSGS
msnmsgr
WMPNSCFG
Run once
nothing
deleted
nothing.
thats what is listed using the utility you gave me.
there were no viruses in the AVG scan, i checked for latest definitions before attempting test, same with spybot and the ad-aware scan i thought was the latest version but it wasnt, i have downloaded the latest version and will begin testing. but apart from "tracking cookies" there wasnt anything else in the original scan, but better to be safe than sorry.
i will look into replacing that firewall.

Re: Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
You can get rid of the NvCplDaemon. This is the System Tray icon used to change display settings, the clock rate, and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. It's not necessary. You can configure these settings in Display Properties. It's just another one of those elements which the software/hardware vendor decides you should have running, for no good reason.
You can also disable the "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" if enabled as it can cause this entry to be re-enabled on re-boot (note that this service can also cause extreme shutdown delays if enabled - http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/strangeservice.htm) Read the notes for this service at the linked site to assess your decision. Especially if you're a "gamer".
If you decide to stop this process, go to Start, Run and type in services.msc and hit ENTER. Navigate to the service named NVIDIA Driver Helper Service (nvsvc32.exe) and right-click on it. Click "Properties". In the "Status" dialog box, select "Stop". Under "Startup type", select "Disabled". Click "Apply" and then "OK".
nwiz:
nwiz.exe is a part of NVidia's Nview features installable alongside it's graphics hardware products. This application will give the user access to additional features which allow the configuration of up to 32 monitors on a host, or to expand the desktop across many monitors. This is also a non-essential process.
CHotKey:

Did you check your bios settings for the WAKE elements?

Re: Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
i looked through the bios (every page and subpage)
all i could find was
USB Dev. Wake-UP from S3 - enabled.
also this option was on the same page
Soft-off by PBTN - Instant off
i havent changed anything in the bios i exited without saving.
at the top of the bios page it said phoenix technologies, whether that will shed any light in where the WAKE options are.
i hope its not me being dumb

Re: Computer reboots when i disable internet connection
You're doing fine, not dumb. ;>)
I'm just trying to track down anything you may have either running, or associated, with the internet connection which may be triggering this erroneous behaviour.
The Soft-off is your power button setting. It's set for Instant off. This is fine.
The USB setting should be fine, unless your LAN or Modem (whichever device you use to connect to the Internet) is USB. If it is USB, then there may be a connection (relevance) there.
So thus far we have two possibilities;
Windows Firewall causing eratic behaviour, and LAN/Modem on USB wake up.
What is your motherboard make and model number? ie; GIGABYTE GA-7VKML-P
