re-installing XP Home problem

hi all...computer had a "hiccup" and had to reinstall windows(hiccup was my fault not backing up reg..tinkering etc..)
anyways trying to reinstall it and and i keep getting this message....
"fatal error"
"an error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
one of the components that windows needs to continue setup couldnt be installed

data error(cyclic redundancy check)

If youre installing frim a CD there might be a problem with the disc(i checked the disc and even the re-install disc that came with the computer) same problem..

i thought this may have been dirty discs but not the same problem with both ...
so i am stumped...so thus i cant reinstall windows and would like very much to do so before christmas..

this may be a simple overlook on my part and if so pls dont flame me...(again) lol

TYVM all

Re: re-installing XP Home problem

Just to clarify:

This is a brand name computer (e.g. Dell; HP; etc.) and you were using an XP disk other than theirs?

If so this can be problematic.

What is the make and model of the computer?

That error is in general a bad CD or an improper CD.

For example a Dell computer needs a Dell CD unless you choose to totally wipe the drive and install a New version of Windows.

.............

This is also curious as Windows is trying to install to D:

I would suspect a recovery partition on that hard drive.

If you are not using the manufacturers software and instructions this could be the problem.

If for some reason you are intentionally installing to D: perhaps you can clarify this.

no D: was the DVD-ROM drive with the installation disc

i had been using another winXP disc...then found the orig DELL disc and tried the setup again....although not to repair the installation but i did format the drive to make a fresh reinstall...

im trying this again with the dell disc...even if its SP1 lol if it works i can DL SP2 later on...
reformatting the drive....ill know within 20 mins or so if this works..

if i didnt clarify something pls let me know and ill try to reclarify...

also its a dell inspiron 8200 series

Re: re-installing XP Home problem

Manufacturers create their own proprietary operating systems based on Microsoft's version.

As such they require their own software to reinstall.

Installing a New Microsoft OS would require wiping the old hard drive and hoping that you could find proper drivers. Plus a new valid Product Key.

Manufacturers protect their property even after they sell it to you.
