Sound card error? Random reboots

I've been having a problem that just started this evening. Well, sorta. I've been having random reboots for a while now, and can't quite figure out where they're coming from (says something about Windows has recovered from a serious error), but now we have a new problem.

I'm playing a regular flash-based game through Firefox when this happens. (Old game, have played it in the past with no problem.)

The speakers will start making odd noises; both times it happened has been different. The first time was a weird sort of frozen repeat sound, the second was an outright beep repeated over and over again, then the computer rebooted.

Microsoft error reporting kicks in, but of course is useless for actually telling me the problem. It says something about a hardware driver, but also mentions error messages and the BSOD, but neither happens. Just the noise, then the reboot.

Nothing new has been installed. This is a relatively new install of XP... new HD for Christmas, which was installed Christmas eve, a legal copy of XP installed, and as far as I know up to date, according to windows update.

Any clues what might be causing either of these problems? I'd like to have a stable computer.

See this post to get more error details:

BSOD Diagnostics

You also might as well run MemTest.

Failing RAM will have some of these symptoms.

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

There was a system error at the approximate time this happened last night, but it's all gibberish to me! Now that you mention it, RAM going bad would fit the problem.

Error code 000000c2, parameter1 00000041, parameter2 85c09000, parameter3 00005c09, parameter4 0003fffb.

I'm having the weird sound error now, but haven't gotten a reboot yet. I've had to mute my speakers to continue working without a headache.

I'll run memtest as soon as I figure out how.

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

Alright, while attempting to reboot so I could run memtest, I got a BSOD:

EDIT: Just read the sticky on the BSOD errors up there, so here's my debuglog:

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

Just updated the audio driver for the sound card... will see if this improves anything.

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

That dump did point to your audio device although that may still be the victim of an underlying issue.

Do you have a PCI sound card or motherboard audio? If a card try using the motherboard.

MemTest runs off a floppy (easy way) or you can burn it as an ISO to a CD.

Let us know if you need further clarification.

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

I'm fairly sure it's a PCI card. I updated the drivers, ran memtest, and it seemed to fix the problem.

No dice. Got another bluescreen today.

Memtest came up error-free again, and here's the dump:

Re: Sound card error? Random reboots

I would go back to the motherboard audio and see if the problem persists.

Removing the PCI card would be a good idea as well.

You may need to change the BIOS audio setting to revert to the motherboard.
