Changing owner
Hi
I have brought my Dad's laptop off him and would like to change settings so instead of having his name after the my documents etc it says mine. Have changed the user name to mine but it still says his name in the my documents string if I add the document and path to the footer of a word document for example. Can someone give me instructions of how to do this and whether it is an easy job or not?
Thanks :0)
Jo

Re: Changing owner
The Computer Name can be changed via right clicking My Computer then click Properties then Computer Name > Change.
I think this will make the change you are after.

Re: Changing owner
This doesn't do it as this doesn't say my Dad's name but another name he has given the computer, so doesn't seem to affect the my documents htread otherwise those two names would match I am sure :0)

Re: Changing owner
Is this Home or Pro?
Did you delete Dad's User account? Assuming it was not the built in admin account.
Are you using the built in admin account?
There are some ideas in this thread:

Re: Changing owner
Its Pro, and no I didn't delete his user account, he was the one that took off his info from the user name and put my name on so when it opens up my name comes up, but hasn't changed the name on my documents etc.
Also, can you tell me what the suffix is for Internet explorer bookmarks (whats after the . ??? ) as trying to find them on old hard drive to move to new computer but don't know where they are located?
Thanks

Re: Changing owner
Go to start Run... control userpasswords2
What accounts are listed?
=============
.url
The best way to find and move is with the Import/Export tool
They are located: C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Favorites

Re: Changing owner
Hmm, think there is something odd about the set up on this one then as none of the things are where you say they should be! God sometimes computers can drive me mad!! LOL Will try searching with things with .url and see if that works!

Re: Changing owner
Did you run control userpasswords2?
This will show all the accounts on your computer.
If your Dad originally used the built-in admin account then you probably cannot change it.
But if he created a separate account, as he should have, then you should be able to delete him and the file path name should change.

Re: Changing owner
ASPNET is .NET Framework. Long story but this is a valid user service helping your computer.
Guest should generally be disabled for security reasons.
Can I assume that Malcolm is your Dad?
