Problems after doing a systems recovery.

I did a systems recovery on my desktop, a HP Pavilion, running Windows XP. I had a problem on initial start up and received the following error message,"NTLDR is compressed Press ctrl-alt-del to restart". I tried this and kept getting the same error message. I then went to HP website and decompressed the recovery partition and Windows started loading. I went through the start uo screen and when the monitor went blank to load up my desk top, instead of loading the desk top the monitor goes into sleep mode and I have nothing. I tried booting up several times and I have the same results. Can anyone help me figure out what this problem is ? Thank-you in advance.
