xp set time problem

trying to set time (after daylight saving bull>>>>) and each time i try to put clock back and apply it goes back to old time, then forwarded clock 1 day and time set ok but when tried to change date back one day and then apply it reverted back to incorrect date, so now time ok but date incorrect, sounds simple to fix but spent 2 days without any luck can anyone help please. i done a virus check nothing,

Also, if your machine is a desktop which is three to four or more years old, check your cmos battery. It may be dying.

thx for reply, i should have stated its my laptop only 7 mths old, and the m/s stuff did not work, when i changed my time setting and finally got the correct time my date was wrong, and could not change the date i.e 9th april, to 8th april and visa versa so both time and date is haywire, i have gotten into setup (cmos) and changed it there and looks like its ok now but am still concerned why this would happen, did the usal virus scans etc but nothing. any ideas?
