Kbdus.dll
Hello everyone
For some unearthly reason my computer has decided not to show any information after it has run throught the 'Windows Starting' bit. The screen just remains blank with no action from the HD light.
I have tried to use the 'system restore,' to no avail.
I decided to try my WinXP Revovery Disk which gets as far as 'Windows is Starting Up,' then comes up with 'Setup cannot find KBDUS.DLL so shut down the computer etc.'
Starting XP in Safe mode enables me to find KBDUS.DLL in the 32 system. but for some reason it cannot be found on Start-up.
I have checked with MS on the net using my wife's machine (this is from my wife's machine) and it says to give Full Control to everyone. But how does noe do this please?
regards

Re: Kbdus.dll
Boot up your computer into Safe Mode.
Locate KBDUS.DLL.
Right click the file and select Properties. Then go to the Security tab.
In the top pane, click System and then in the bottom pane in the Allow column, put a checkmark in Full Control. Click Apply.
Do the same for Everyone and Administrators.
Click Ok.
Reboot your computer and everything should hopefully be working fine.

Re: Kbdus.dll
Thank you Owen for a prompt reply. I did as you suggested to no avail?
Does having kbdus.dll in upper-case letters make any difference please?
Also do you have any other ideas please?

Right, so you are booting from the Windows XP disc, how far does it actually get before the error is displayed? Describe the steps you go through before the error flashes up so that I can understand where it is exactly happening.

Re: Kbdus.dll
Sorry Owen about my delay in answering your post, but I was using my wife's machine to access the web; can you believe that her machine crashed too, I think with a u/s CPU.
However I have now solved the problem and my own machine is working just fine once again.
This KBDUS.DLL is one helluva problem, It is worse than the old days of working in DOS, except one has absolutely no idea why the computer cannot complete the start-up procedure. I only found out by using my original XP-Pro disk to try and solve the problem, when it arrived at the 'Windows is Starting Up,' stage, a blue screen announced that the file, ' kbdus.dll is missing, shut down the conputer.' Very, very uninformative, as I say much worse that Dos, which did sometimes give a clue, however briefly.
I then rang my daughter who also uses Winxp and asked her how many copies of the kbdus.dll were on her computer. She quickly came back with 'two,' and their locations. As I was able to get into my machine is 'Safe' mode, I discovered that I only had one copy in lower-case in Windows sys32. The other copy, in upper-case was in a i386 folder on the c:\ drive. For some unaccountable reason this folder had been automatically wiped from my computer.
I therefore created a 'new' folder 'i386' on the c:\ drive, shovelled in a copy of the .dll from the sys32 folder, changed the case to upper, fired up my machine and 'Eureka!' back in business.
Owen, for MS to introduce the new 'Vesta' system without completely sorting out xp beats me? Why I do not think they really ever sorted out Win 3.10.
However I do like XP and will soldier on until about the year 2030 when all may be well with Vista.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Kbdus.dll
Glad you got stuff sorted. My next line of attack was involving the i386 folder. This is the folders that houses files used to repair, install, modify and update Windows. This is why you were getting the problems when trying to reinstall.
The fact is, no Operating System can be 100% bug free. Sometimes things do get deleted by programs or by us accidentally or sometimes for reasons that we can't explain, and that's when the problems start. XP has a little tool called the System File Checker and that enables you to check your system and restore essential OS files that have been corrupted or deleted. Your problem was, the repository from which SFC would restore the files (i386) wasn't there! I think XP is pretty decent and it's getting to a stage now where it's quite mature and doesn't suffer from many "bugs", but errors will always happen.
