Slow/freezing but nothing using processor in task manager

Hi,

I have a strange problem with a PC which is running realy slowly. Nothing shows up as using any significant processor power in task manager and I have disabled everything under run>msconfig but the problem is still present. I even went through the list of sevices and disabled anyhing that looked like it shouldn't be there.

I think the slowest things are windows based. e.g. opening IE, or rightClick>proporties on my computer takes a very long time, but opening the antivirus software is ok.

Not a problem in safemode though. Since nothing shows up in task manager I'm not sure how to find out the cause of the problem. Anyone got any ideas??

Cheers

Have a look at this post about Cleaning Up and Speeding Up your PC, hopefully some information in there may be of use to you and help solve the problem.

Re: Slow/freezing but nothing using processor in task manager

Hi,

I'm not a total newbie to computers dispite my DAL status so I did a general clean and speed up allready.
I was wondering if there was a technique I could use to find what may be causing the slowdown as I can't see it in the running processes.
The PC is old and slow anyway (450MHz i think) but there's definatley something odd going on.

If I 'fix' everything shown in the hijack this log will it do any major damage or will I just be able to re-enable some startup entries that I do want?

Cheers

Re: Slow/freezing but nothing using processor in task manager

There isn't any general quick fix method to diagnose slow downs. Usually a clean up and optimisation solves the problem, but sometimes it can be a hardware issue. Like broni said, please post your full computer specifications so we have a bit more background info.

Removed entries using Hijack This can be restored, but "fixing" everything isn't a very good idea, it could remove essential startup entries necessary for certain hardware run. If you follow the instruction in the Speeding Up post, it tells you how to check what is necessary at startup if you don't already know.

As Owen said, it's a really bad idea, if you don't know what you're doing.
You may post HJT though, for us to see what's running there.
