C Drive Getting Full

Hello all!

I have a laptop and My C: Drive is beginning to get full but I also have a D: Drive with hardly anything on it and I wondered if I could maybe transfer some things from C to D.

I have little experience with computers so the simpler the explanation the better please :-)

I've also noticed my laptop slowing down a bit, is this because the C: Drive is getting full?

The C drive is primarily used for system files, ie the operating system. Typically, the C drive is the smaller of the 2 on a hard drive which has been shipped partitioned.

If you go into My Computer, you can view the hard drive partitions in your computer. You should be able to move photos and music etc over to the D Drive with no problems. I would make a back up before hand though, to double make sure all your files are secure. I back up everything twice other than the original copy onto two different types of media.

From experience, i think that as the C drive becomes more full with files the operating system has to look around more for the correct files to work. So by emptying it from images and music etc, it works better and faster......

Could be wrong though, and i'm sure someone else will advise further very soon.

I am assuming that you are runningWin-XP.
Do as suggested above by flightidle, you can also move video and other data and text files.


You may also want to download and run CCleaner (previously known as CrapCleaner). Its FREE and does a fairly good job getting rid of junk files, temporary files, log files, accumulated internet files, etc.

You stated that you have little experience with computers so the simpler the explanation the better please :-)

I think I will need more details of how to move files from C to D as I don't really know what I'm doing.

My operating system is Windows XP it is mostly video files that I wish to move.

I do have CCleaner downloaded but have been unsure when using it as I didn't want to delete something by mistake.

I will try to be as basic as possible, its not hard. Remember that there is no such thing as a dumb question, however they are easier to answer

1) Double click on MY COMPUTER.
2) Double click on the icon for your C drive
3) Double click on MY COMPUTER again
4) Double click on the icon for your D drive
You should now have two seperate windows open, one for C & one for D
5) Right click an empty spot on you task bar (the bar at the bottom of the screen where your START button is, & click TILE WINDOWS VERTICALLY. this will align your two windows side by side for easy drag & drop method.

6) In the D window, click File, NEW, FOLDER. Name the folder Eddys Videos, or what ever you want. then double click on the folder name.
7) Locate your video file on the C drive. Most likely in a folder called MY Videos.
8) Highlight the videos you want or just select all, hold the left mouse button down & drag the files to the D window, release the mose button. THATS IT.
9) check & make sure that all the files copied okay, then if you feel comfortable you can delet the ones on the C drive.


I have to run now now but I will give you some info on CCleaner tomorrow.

CCleaner

Double CCleaner icon, when the CC screen appears click the Cleaner brush icon.
Click the System tab.
You can safely check all the options under Internet Explorer & Windows Explorer.
Under System check everything except Empty Recycle Bin.
At this time, leave the Advance area UNCHECKED.
Click the Application tab.
I don't know what apps you are running but they will all be listed.
Putting a check in the box for the app will clean all junk files created by the application. Most multi-media applications create a large amount of junk files which are needed when editing & viewing, CC will clean these files out, they are only used by the application as temp files.

Once you have your options checked, click Analyze. CC will display all the files that are flagged for removal. Browse through, if you are comfortable click Rin Cleaner.

Once you start feeling comfortable with CC, go through the options & help. You can fine tune it, and run periodically to keep your system clean.
