computer freezes at windows after boot

Hi all!

I have a AMD 2.6ghz windows XP SP 2with an MSI 7021 motherboard and American Megatrends Bios. X86 based PC.
The problem is when I get to the windows page to start working the first click(an example is to click on Start)
the entire page freezes except the mouse which show the hour glass. It is doing something in the background that
seems to wait for it to time-out before the computer starts working right. This amount of freezing appears to be
5 to 15 minutes. I can't see anything in Task manager processes doing it. The Event viewer sometimes shows errors
in Service Control Manager(Application Layer Gateway service failed to start due to the service not responding to
start or control in a timely fashion), DCOM(the server 73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBBO-99B7938DA9E4 or another such number)
did not register with DCOM within required timeout, disk(driver detected a controller error on\Device\Harddisk0\D
(i just put new one in), ntfs-Delayed Writed Failed, ftdisk-system failed to flush data to the transaction log,
Side by Side-error was deteded on device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation, sbp2port-device did not respond
within the timeout period, CDrom error was detected on device CdRom0
during paging operation(42 warnings), and lastly I don't want this to go on forever
Side by Side-Dependent Assembly Microsoft VC80.MFCLOC could not be found and Last Error was assembly in not
installed on system/next error after the one I just wrote is Side by Side-Resolve Partial Assembly failed for
Micro VC80.MFCLOC assembly not installed on system AND LAST Side by Side after previous 2 is Generate Activation

DLL. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully.

Hey!
I think the guru's should be able to put this into human language or guide us in some other manner to point out directions of problems.
Sorry to throw so much crap at you at once but I know you want as much info as can be supplied.

I JUST HOPE I DIDN'T OVER DO IT!!!!!!!!

Ed

Re: computer freezes at windows after boot

Is this a new problem?

Did this computer work previously?

Why did you install a new hard drive? Is it SATA or IDE?

If SATA did you jumper it down to SATA I? Your mobo only supports SATA I. Most drives ship as SATA II.

If SATA did you load the SATA drivers during the install F6?

Did you Clean Install XP on the new drive? Did you install all Windows Updates? Which would now mean SP3?

Side by side errors are often .NET Framework or a current C++ Runtime.

Did you reload the motherboard drivers?

I would suspect a hard drive issue which implies the above SATA issues.

If it is IDE then verify that it is Primary Master and all the Clean Install steps were taken including Windows Updates and mobo drivers.

Also until the issues are resolved remove all peripheral devices such as external drives etc.

Re: computer freezes at windows after boot

Jephree,

Thanks for all the avenues of advice to be done. I went and found motherboard drivers, BIOS flashed updated. SP3 installed and complete. The reason for the new hard drive was
event viewer was showing hard drive issues so I just got a new one(old one was 5 years old).
The above two fixes took care of whatever was going wrong.
Quite frankly, I am as ignorant about in depth things as can be when it comes to computers.
So going step by step as suggested by you and using MSI automatic update with no flash problem I feel I got lucky.

I want to thank you again for straightforward advice.

Thanks,
Ed
