Re: Java won't work and Program access and defaults goues back to 'custom'

Go to the Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

Remove all JAVA entries.

Reboot your computer and load the latest Java:

http://www.java.com/en/

As to Access and Defaults in most cases it will be "Custom".

Due to various processes in place to remove Microsoft's monopoly on software the "Custom" tag is normal.

For example in this case Java is over-riding the MS VM.

Re: Java won't work and Program access and defaults goues back to 'custom'

Done all that but it still wont work...Something seems to be over riding the system because what ever I change on the 'program access and defaults' area immediately changes back to the custom area...no matter what.....Also java is not installed into Internet explorer...Its like something is blocking the installation....never had this happen before

Re: Java won't work and Program access and defaults goues back to 'custom'

The "Access and Defaults" should be "Custom".

The "Microsoft" setting is obsolete.

Are you running IE7? Are you running SP3? In other words all Windows Updates?

Can you give an example of a website where you have this problem?

Also:

Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Basic information on Event Viewer errors can be found here: EventID.Net

Java Problem with Windows XP - How to change Permissions

I have installed Java on Windows XP. It works fine for one user but when I switch user to another account, it wont run java. I go into java control panel, then 'advanced' then 'default java for browsers' and click on the 'Internet explorer' box...but when I then click the 'apply' box...I get the following message...'Error browser' Unable to change browser settings' Please check if you have sufficient permissions to change browser settings. How do I change the permissions to allow me to use java on a different account within windows XP ??????

Re: Java Problem with Windows XP - How to change Permissions

Is it Home or Pro?

Are the users all Administrators or Limited?

Is anyone using the Main Administrator account?

Basically setup Java on the Main account and during installation choose "Apply to all users".

Re: Java won't work and Program access and defaults goues back to 'custom'

Did each user install it for themselves?

If not that is one approach.

Otherwise XP Home has a "Built - in" Administrator which is both invisible as well as omnipotent.

To access this account boot into "Safe Mode w/ Networking" and choose "Administrator".

If no Password was ever set then leave the Password blank and hit Enter.

You should now be able to go online and install the latest Java:

Download Free Java Software - Sun Microsystems

During the install watch for an option that says: "Me Only" or "All Users" and choose the latter.

I would also suggest removing from Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs all Java programs prior to this operation.
