The above link should cover your options within Windows.

If you cannot access Windows at all you will need to reinstall unless the main admin account was left open.

To try this boot into Safe Mode (XP Home) or use CTRL+ALT+DEL (XP Pro) then Administrator + Password (leave blank).

Due to policy here at D-A-L these cover about all the options we can suggest on the subject.

You can always Google for other possibilities.

Re: password help - xp - dell 5100 lap

Attempting to install non Dell OS on a Dell laptop will always be somewhat problematic.

Drivers will be hard to find.

Anyway if you have a full 2K CD with proper key and want to install it just run KillDisk first.

KillDisk will totally remove all data from the laptop.

Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser. Low Level Format.

Neither 2K nor XP use DOS per se. KillDisk is FDISK plus. Total erase.

Then install 2K (assuming a full disk with valid key).

Afterwards you will need to try and find specific drivers.

Re: password help - xp - dell 5100 lap

Hi Again:
I have gone to 4 different websites for free downloads of "erasers" and could you please explain how to create a "floppy" when all the downloads are way too big and they want a bigger capacity floppy. I do vaugely remember seeing a larger one at "Staples", is this what I need? And what is an image, as in "rawwrite-0.7" which is used in conjunction with "erase3 or erase35"? Thank You once again!

Re: password help - xp - dell 5100 lap

Most floppy downloads that come in oversize contain more than just the floppy needed.

You download the software then run the .EXE to create the floppy.

The SETUP download will be much larger than the created floppy.

KillDisk's web site is down right now but here is a mirror:

Save the download then Run the .EXE

At that point they will instruct you to insert your floppy.

Also just to add an image is an ISO that uses a CD. If you had no floppy you could put the same software on a CD as an image or ISO.
