AVI file conversion

Hello! Hope someone can help me. I am trying to create a DVD and/or an Ipod compatible video file which will play on a conventional DVD player and/or Ipod classic. The file I wish to convert is an AVI file which I recorded using “AutoScreenRecorder”. I have tried “prism” software which can convert AVI to wmv, asf, mpg, mp4, flv & mov but I am totally confused with all these different file types. Can anyone shed some light on this please?
PC: Acer Aspire AMD Sempron 2GB RAM
Thanks, Steve.

Re: AVI file conversion

I guess first of all you have to decide on which player you want the file to be able to be played on. New DVD players even support .avi or .mpeg computer video files. However, in the case of the iPod it only supports .mp4 files if I am not mistaken. I own the iPod Classic and I can only sync .mp4 files into my iPod.

I'm assuming that when you mean a conventional DVD player you mean the more common and slightly older models that have less "high tech" functions. In that case it may be that those DVD players can only play .vob files.

Most DVD-Video burning software would automatically re-encode the video you are trying to burn into a .vob file for the DVD. In those cases, it wouldn't matter if you are using .avi or not.

On a side note, the more commonly used and seen files (to me) are ".avi", ".mpg", ".mov", ".wmv" and ".mp4". If you want a video file that can be played on the iPod, go for .mp4. And if your dvd burning software auto-encodes the video file into .vob... Well you have nothing to lose then =D

I hope I've been clear and accurate lol.

Re: AVI file conversion

Hello! Thanks for this information. Please forgive my ignorance, but once I have the required files, i.e. “.iva” “.mp4” etc. how do I get them onto Ipod or disk? I have NTI CD & DVD maker software, is this okay? I usually only import music files direct to Itunes & then to Ipod. How do I do this with “.mp4” files? I’ve tried “Jobix” Ipod video converter but I keep getting a codec related error, even though I have downloaded “K-Lite codec pack”. Any further help appreciated.
Thanks, Steve.

Re: AVI file conversion

iTunes should be able to handle .mp4 files perfectly I believe? I just drag and drop ".mp4" files into my iTunes library and set it to sync with my iPod. Perhaps you can explain to me what you try to do with Jobix?

To get them burned onto a disc, you can use softwares such as Ashampoo, Roxio or Nero to burn them. I wouldn't recommend Roxio as it left a bad taste in my mouth but apparently Ashampoo is a very good disc burning software.

If you like I can post the links for you later. =D

Re: AVI file conversion

Hello again! I use AutoScreenRecorder to capture some moving text files (no sound) in an AVI file then Prism software to convert to mp4. When I try to drag these into itunes the file tries to open but then comes up with an error. When using the Jobix software at the add file stage (1st step), when I try to input either avi or mpeg then an error immediately occurs saying that file cannot be read correctly.
I’ve tried using Ashampoo with .avi, .mpg, .mp4 and only the .mpg file is accepted and writes to DVD. However when tying to play this disc on my DVD player most of the image is missing. All of these files open and play in windows media player and media player classic.
Regards, Steve.

Re: AVI file conversion

Correct me if I am wrong but is this how things went?

You have an avi file with a short clip which you want to capture and convert into .mp4, so you use AutoScreenRecorder to do so, and when you save you save it as a mp4 file am I right?

I'm quite baffled to be honest. Perhaps you would be willing to send the file over for me to try it? I'm hoping some of the more tech savvy moderators will have a solution for your problem.

Re: AVI file conversion

Hi Kaistar,

I have sent 2 file attachments to admin@d-a-l.com . They are:

1) samp.avi – from the AutoScreenRecorder software

2) samp.mp4 – produced after converting the above file using Prism software

Both files play on media player but the .mp4 file will not play in Itunes or burn successfully to DVD using Ashampoo.
Should I send these files somewhere else?
Regards, Steve.

Re: AVI file conversion

Hi Steve,

what is the extension of the file that you are trying to convert? Is it a .avi or does it have another extension? If it is .avi i would recommend Super converter. This is a free software available on super.com
It converts almost anything into .vob, mpeg2, mpeg3 and mpeg4 and other formats. It is quite easy to install and use.

Being an Encoder myself (i used to release KvCD's) i'm interested in knowing what format your files are in right now.

Cheers,

ReB

Re: AVI file conversion

He's using Super Converter already. I introduced it to him. However he's still having problems with it. Perhaps you can PM me your email so I can forward you his attachments?
