That said, I have done that exact same procedure several time without incident. But still, problems can occur. So I recommend you back up any data you don't want to lose, just in case something happens during the conversion - which is a vulnerable time. Not a good time for a power outage! Yet another reason for all to computers to be on a good UPS with AVR, but that's for another discussion.
Also, I generally recommend running chkdsk /r from a command prompt before converting to make sure there are no problems on the disk first. Follow the prompts to allow the process to run at next boot, then reboot. This process can take several hours. Note, you can see what the various switches do by entering chkdsk /?
If you prefer to not use a command (MS-DOS) prompt, you can run "Error Checking" from the drive's properties menu under My Computer. This is the same as using the /f switch is chkdsk, which is nearly as thorough as /r.
