Fatal error

Trying to install HP Photosmart printer scanner copier into Packard Bell computer running WindowsXP.Showing 96%complete but will not finish and keep getting fatal error message.The printer seems to work OK but error message keeps appearing and I have to cancel it every few minutes which is annoying.Have tried reinstalling several times with same result.(have tried swearing at it but didn't work)
Not really computer confident so what to try next?
