sp3 installation
I have had problems installing XP sp3. It started with trying to do automatic updates then I downloaded and trying to install, then trying to install in safe mode...always taking off firewall and antivirus protections. Anyone have a solution?

Re: sp3 installation
I didn't have any problems installing SP 3 but I didn't use automatic updates to install it. Instead I downloaded the full installation file which is really only possible if you have access to high speed internet. It is 316 mb in size. I then did a manual install. You can try that if you haven't. Only get the install file from microsoft's website. Don't even use a search engine to find it. Go to microsoft's website & search for it from there. Getting a copy from anywhere else could be full of spy ware.

Re: sp3 installation
Hi arobin,
How much room have you got on your C:\Drive? I suggest you download SIW.EXE which will tell you all about your system.
Would you also tell us what Antivirus and Antispyware programs you are running and how often you clean out your temporary internet files etc.
Keep us posted,
kind regards,

Re: sp3 installation
Try installation from the full install file while in safe mode. Also if available try reverting to a restore point before you first tried to install it. If that doesn't help, I'm at a loss except to say that your chances of success might be after on a fresh installation of XP. If you do this, make this the first thing that you install. Oh do you get an error message during install or does it just stop?

Re: sp3 installation
Arobin,
While browsing the net I found the following that maybe worth you following up on.
Can't install Service Pack 3
QUESTION:
I have tried to install Service Pack 3 on my XP computer each time Windows Update shows it available, but I get an error message whenever I try. Can you help? Thanks. - Don M.
ANSWER:
There are numerous reasons that could be preventing the service pack from installing. First I would check out all the prerequisites for installing SP3 and be sure that you've met them. For the checklist, see KB article 950717 at
Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
Especially note that you can't install SP3 if you have certain updates installed, such as the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit and the Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 MUI pack. You have to uninstall these updates first. Your anti-virus software can also prevent SP3 from installing so you may have to disable it temporarily.
Here are further ideas that may help you regarding SP3.
You might also try downloading the standalone version of the service pack rather than installing through Windows Update. You can get it at
Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers
(Ignore the instructions that say to visit Windows Update if you're only installing SP3 on one computer).
For more tips on troubleshooting an unsuccessful SP3 installation, see
How to troubleshoot an unsuccessful installation of Windows XP Service Pack 3
Post back and let us know if this helped you at all.
kind regards,

Re: sp3 installation
Hi Arobin,
If you have exhausted all the issues in the research I did in my previous post I would suggest you post a question here at Microsoft Newgroups. You may also find the answer to your problem reading other folks posts.
You need to create a Microsoft Passport by registering with a username and password to access the site much like any other forum.
Hope you get the answer to your worries.
kind regards,

Re: sp3 installation
You aren't providing enough info. Please tell me what happens. Does your computer freeze, reboot or shut down, or does it stop & give you an error code? Do you have the updates installed that the microsoft artcle mentioned by tallin says not to have installed because they are incompatible with sp 3? We need more info before we can help you.
