cant connect but have excellent signal

Ive tried everything. The other computers in the house work fine. My IP address is fine, everything pings correctly. I did a system restore, uninstalled everything, I still cant get online. It worked fine last week. i installed security software, then i could only get online with an ethernet cable. eventually not at all. Thats when I did the system restore. my signal says excellent & when i called my internet provider they told me it wasnt a problem with the connection. Ive tried everything from cmd prmpts to winsocks but I dont know if i did them right. Im so frustrated. I have an acer aspire5002 laptop. Any info would be greatly appreciated or suggestions of what it could be. Thank you

Re: cant connect but have excellent signal

So you can log into your router?

Did you try taking your FW down for a test? Do not leave it down, even if it lets you through.

Re: cant connect but have excellent signal

Yep, I tried to unable firewall. still cant connect. Verizon said the router was fine, although when I type 192.168..... it asks for user name & password but when i do this it says unauthorized. I remembered before doing this & configuring the modem. Verizon said i didnt need to restart the modem b/c i would have to configure all the other computers & they're fine.
is they're anyway to check the computer to see where the problem is without a connection?

Re: cant connect but have excellent signal

If you can get to the router's log in screen, your network connections are fine. If the other computers on your network can access the Internet, your "gateway" (the modem) is fine.

It would seem your router has blocked access to the Internet from your machine. You need to get your password and look around inside your router.

From a command prompt, what does ipconfig /all reveal?

Re: cant connect but have excellent signal

Everything pings normally. Ip address is good, default gateway is good. It does say media disconnected. I read that some security software can corruppt files if removed improperly. Something about winsocks or registry.
i have no idea, but everything comes back as being connected & working fine. I've had verizon check it with the "sharing" tool they have & they said it was a problem with my laptop. It's out of warranty & they wanna charge me per minute.

Re: cant connect but have excellent signal

After pinging yahoo:

Packets: Sent =4, Rec'd = 4, Lost=0%

If i had a virus or something was corrupted wouldnt a system recovery or system restore wipe it clean? I also thought it was a browser issue but firefox wouldnt open either. Right before i had the problems i installed AVG free 8.0, Comodo firewall & Spybot S&D, each a day apart.
