software

I lost the software for my DSL external modem. My operating system is Windows XP. I have tried to re-download the software from the CD, but it won't read it. I can't seem to get an answer from the internet provider. They say it must be the operating system. This is the only issue I am having. Please help.

Re: software

What ISP are you using, and what is the make/model of the modem?

Re: software

I am connected by DSL. Centurytel is the provider and the modem is a Westell, model 6100. IT was working fine until about 3 weeks ago when the software disappeared from the computer. I have since tried to download the software from the CD. For some reason, my computer will not read the software.

Re: software

To interject a question here, when you say "software", do you mean drivers? Modems don't generally require "software" but they do require drivers.

There's some good information on this modem here; Detailed information for the BellSouth 2100/2200/6100 Westell modems. AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ - dslreports.com
This link has a lot of info, and further links, for modem setup. It also states that a Modem CD is NOT required to install/setup the modem.

I found this; Westell 6100 DSL Modem Installation Guide - LavaNet Support among other things for that modem. Is the information in this link similar to what you're looking for?

Re: software

ok, open up internet explorer, and type in the address bar: 192.168.1.1
if you get the modem configuration screen thingy, it means you are connected driver-wise, and it should work without the software, just using internet explorer.

Re: software

hmm.. since thats the address for that modem, it would seem that the computer is not connecting to the modem at all..
are you using USB or Ethernet?

Re: software

I am using a USB connection. This is what I have been using for several years, since this computer did not have an ethernet connection. The provider thought the PCI card went bad, so I replaced it with another PCI usb card connection. I installed it and everything else works fine. I am beginning to wonder if my CD drive might not be reading the software. Is that possible?
