mpeg files

I have a sony digital video camera with the hard drive. I have burned many dvd's and backed up the mpeg files to an external hard drive many times. My laptop crashed ( I had everything backed up) and I had a new hard drive installed. Yesterday I tried to burn my dvd's, it went through the process and the dvd's physically look like they have been writen to but I can't play them. Also when I down loaded the videos from my camera to my external drive, the icons look different. The old icons had the Media player (Play triangle) and the new icons have picture of a piece of film with the word mpeg on the picture. They don't play prooperly either, they start and stop.

So, i'm not sure if the problem stems from the new hard drive replacement era or the use of a newer version of the media player or something else.
All the video is of treasured family moments.

Thanks for your help in advance.
Rick

Re: mpeg files

When you replaced a new hard disk, did you reinstall your operating system (winXP, vista etc)? It could be possible that your codecs are not updated if that is the case. How did you backup and restore your files?

Re: mpeg files

I backed up all my files to an external hard drive, then I loaded them back.
But needless to say everything was not as before.
Any ideas on what I can do next?
Thanks again in advance for your help!
