Blue screen, try to reinstall XP & says pci.sys missing
Hi there,
I am desperate for help but not too hot with computers so please bear with me. I got a virus & malware over the weekend. Managed to get rid of this but IE would not open, just popped up the window for .5 sec then shut down. I tried to repair this with my XP disk but nothing happened. I thought i would remove the whole of Xp and reinstall (I did save everything on a n external drive) When i removed the XP service pack3 and then tried to reinstall of the disc it comes up with the ollowing message.
windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys You can attempt to repair the file by starting windowns stup using the original setup cd rom. Select r at the first screen to start repair.
When i then press any button. I then go into set up and try and load this from the CD, it gives m the blue setup screeb and starts loading the files, after a min or 2 is comes up with the dreaded blue screen saying that a poblem has been detected and windowns has been shut down to prevent damage The technical info at th bottom states
STOP:0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08)
PCI.sys - address F748E0BF base at F7487000, DATESTAMP 3b7d855C
I would be VERY grateful if someone could advise on this, i would be happy just to gt rid of everythng on the machine and start a fresh but do not know how to do this, it wont lt m start in safe mode or do anything when i press F8.
Many thanks in advance, (Only started my new company last week and this is relly slowing me down) Thanks again
Dan

Re: Blue screen, try to reinstall XP & says pci.sys missing
It is too bad you decided to reinstall Windows - that is always a last resort option to try after all other options have been exhausted. Besides losing all your data (which you wisely backed up - ) - but, you also lose all your drivers, installed security defenses, and months, if not years of critical security updates.
Is the installation disk a genuine Windows Installation disk, or a "recovery disk" from your computer maker? If a recovery, you will need to visit your manual or PC makers site for instructions to take your PC back to out-of-the-box state. You should visit there anyway (or motherboard maker's site, if self-built) for the latest motherboard drivers.
Hopefully, it is a genuine Windows installation disk. You need to go into your BIOS Setup Menu (as prompted during every boot up) and make sure your CD drive is listed before your boot hard drive in the boot order menu. Then during boots, you will have a few seconds to press any key to boot your installation CD. From there, you can format your drives and reinstall Windows from scratch.

Re: Blue screen, try to reinstall XP & says pci.sys missing
Hi,
Thanks very much for the feedback but need a little more explanation, i will explain why.
Yes, thankfully it is a genuine install disc. I have set this up so that it boots from my cd drive first, it then starts uploading files from the disc, then it gives me the blue setup screen and starts loading the files, after a min or 2 is comes up with the dreaded blue screen saying that a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage The technical info at the bottom states
STOP:0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08)
PCI.sys - address F748E0BF base at F7487000, DATESTAMP 3b7d855C
Thanks again for your help

Hi Dan,
I have the same problem on my other laptop PC last month, I swap the RAM sticks and got the problem fixed, I do not know if this working on yours.
Hope this helps!
