USB compatibility issue?

A strange tale ...
On a Dell 4700 desktop running XP Home there are a number of usb ports with printer, webcam, wireless usb adapter attached at the back, and an external HDD in one of the front 2. Everything works fine.

A Canon camera is attached to the second front port, or in some instances external HDD is removed, and the Canon camera is attached in its place - the problem described below happens in both scenarios.
Photos are then downloaded to the desktop. When download is finished the camera is removed from USB port, and if it has replaced the external HDD, the external HDD is put back.

Now the wireless adapter is no longer working (yellow ! in Device Manager with properties message that device cannot start).
Only option is to power down the desktop, and boot up again.

Any idea what could be causing this.

Re: USB compatibility issue?

Are you using the "Safely Remove Hardware Wizard" when removing devices?
