I'd recommend going Core 2 Duo actually, but if you can afford it the i7 920 Nehalem isn't too costly either at a 200-250 price range.
Dual-Core *should* be able to run the games that you generally wish to play, but as it is "older" technology such a guarantee would be hard to give.
Look at it this way, when parallel processing with multiple cores came out, Intel launched different "brand names" for the same technology. Don't quote me on this but if I'm not mistaken they started with the Pentium D (horrible dual core tech), Pentium Dual-Core and then after that the Pentium C2D series.
What is your budget for the new computer? The guys here are pretty good at hunting down good parts for good prices. 9400GT is a tad... old?
What exactly are the games that you wish to play anyway? =D
