Unmountable_boot_volume

Hey guys/gals...I am getting this error "unmountable_boot_volume" and inserted my XP disk and when I see the "welcome" screen I try to hit "R" and I don't get into the recovery. It just goes right to the BSOD saying the above error. Thoughts?

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

When did the problem start? Did it ever work right?

Are you pressing any key when prompted to boot to the CD?

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

It just started doing that. Yes, I installed XP on this computer about 4 weeks ago and it worked fine. No, I am not pressing any keys when prompted to boot to the CD. I'm I supposed to?

Yes. Boot into the BIOS Setup Menu and change the boot order to put the CD first. Then Save and exit. During the reboot, watch the lower left corner and you should be prompted to press a key to boot to a bootable CD. If you miss it, it will time out and attempt to boot to the HD again.

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

When you hit a button, the system will boot to the CD - from there you can do several things. I am not sure a reinstall is what you want to do first. You might want to see if you can fix the problem before going that far. A search of Google shows many reasons for an unmountable boot volume. See Unmountable Boot Volume. If me, I would boot into the recovery console and attempt to run the following:

chkdsk /r
fixbmbr
fixboot

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

In order for me to install the recovery console I need the computer to boot into the OS correct? Thats the problem, can't get to the OS. If I got to the ASR opition its tell me to insert the diskets and I don't have any. Is there a way to make these disk from another computer?

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

You need to read the instructions under How to install the Recovery Console.
