Problem with 3rd party app after reinstall, no this is a new thread

This may sound like deja vu but it has happened again.
I downloaded some Windows updates including "new" drivers for my monitor. They were so wonderful, reduced my screen resolution to 800x600 and colors to either 8 or 16. Could not see to do anything, ERUNT was unable to save my bacon, so another reinstall of XP and Windows Updates have been instructed NOT to show me those updates again.
Here comes the deja vu, my trusty dBpoweramp Music Converter is misbehaving, this time the CD ripper is the problem. I attempted to rip a CD and it asked me to configure Accurate Rip, which I agreed to, and then it wanted to rip the CD just to be sure. Fine with me, that is what I wanted to do anyhow. It ripped one track and aborted after starting the second saying it could not find a CD drive. Windows Media Player managed to find 2 (one is virtual) and ripped perfectly.
I am ... perplexed, and yet to hear back from Illustrate on the problem. It appears I am still able to convert formats, and edit tags, so it is just the CD ripper that is US.
Suggestions? Mystery SCSI filters again? Reinstall? HijackThis?

I used to use DBPoweramp quite a bit for audio conversion . I always kept way from using it for burning things to disc - obviously more reliable apps are avaliable or preferred . Try burning a disc with Media Player - if the disc burns correctly you can dismiss the cabling as a problem . Try a fresh install with the conversion codecs you use most often . DBPoweramp always ran better the less codecs it was using .

Well I actuallly like dMC CD ripper, and I have seen posts on other forums saying it is now superior to EAC since they now have Accurate Rip.
And I don't know what you mean by cabling. The problem I mentioned was dMC not seeing the CD drive, and my first post mentioned that WMP had found the CD drive.
