Windows updates cause chaos
I have an old computer which I updated this morning, the first time it has updates since July last year. (XP SP3)
All I downloaded were Windows updates, hotfixes, security updates and IE 8. No drivers, or hardware/software fixes.
After installing these and restarting (it wanted to do a Disc Check so I let it do so) I got a screen of 640 x 480, and 4 bit color, and it will not let me change these settings, even though a pop up offers to change them.
After removing one of the updates, with the intention of removing all of them, the computer restarted, I was not quick enough to check the "do not restart now" box it now starts up, wants to do another disc check and then offers to restart either normally, in last good setting or in a choice of safe modes. Whether I choose last good setting, or start normally I get a blue screen, not sure if it the actual BSOD, and a memory dump (I think that was the term) and back to it wanting to do a disc check, then offering me the same choice of good setting or normal start, and around in circles I go.
I got fed up with this and used the switch on the back of the box to shut it down.
So two questions, what in the Windows updates stuffed up my settings, and why am I now getting this blue screen. I am a little aprehensive that the blue screen may be coincidental and the mb or something else inside the box has fried out.
Advice and commiseration required, but I will settle for the advice, please.
