Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Okay, I am grasping at straws.
When I start the computer it goes straight to the desktop, no welcome screen and no sign on to my user account.
Is it possible the computer does not know who I am, and is therefore denying me access?
If so, how do I get a welcome screen?

Yet me get this straight, we were having problems before you deleted the account? Did you delete the account or the program files?

Windows sometimes will just log you in automatically if you don't have a password and you are the only user.

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Hi townsbg,
Yes I was having problems before I deleted the account, these started with one of the things I was trying to install when I reinstalled Windows on the 29th.
An example was something I have in ISO (or daa, to be more precise) format. Power ISO would extract these to a temporary file, then Windows told me I did not have access. In that case I went to the temporary file and ran the install from there. That reinstall finished about 1am, and I don't recall any other access denied issues before I hit the hay, but I wasn't actually using the computer to do anything up to that point.
It was since then, I think the first time I tried to create a pdf perhaps, or generally started using apps I had installed following the reinstall of Windows, that I started getting access denied messages. That prompted me to go to User Accounts in Control Panel, and I saw the ASP.NET user account. This account was not something I had seen before, as the sole user I don't often need to go to that part of the Control Panel; the account was probably created when I downloaded Windows updates. I think I deleted from the control panel. So it is possible there are still some folders, or program files related to the ASP.NET user account. From what Digerati had to say I do not see that re-establishing that user account is a priority, unless it is the cause of the continuing denial of access is the problem here. And seeing that "user" did not install any apps ...
It is good that Windows will let you in if you are the only user, having that screen where you have to click on your user name means that Windows only half starts. EG I get home from work, turn the computer on, go off and feed the cat or whatever, come back to check emails and the computer has paused at the Welcome screen. If I have to click on a user name, it then completes more start up procedures before I can do anything.
I hope that makes the situation clearer, in a long winded way.

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Maybe you should take ownership of the entire program files folder how jephree started in post 2. It will have to be done in safe mode and you should be running as little as possible. Otherwise I don't know what to tell you because I don't know why XP would deny the use of an application to an administrator. If you have XP pro you can try the administrator account. You can unlock it in computer managment. Right click on my computer --> manage --> local users and groups [under system tools] --> users. Double click on administrator and uncheck account is disabled. It should now show up under the welcome screen provided you have the welcome screen enabled. In XP home local users and groups does not show up.

Hi townsbg,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it out in Safe mode and report back.

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Well went in in safe mode. Under administrator options or tools, I selected Nero burning and made that available to all users. That makes no difference when I go back to normal mode. Still unable to create a pdf from Word, even tried a different pdf creator, which did not work either, but at least did not lock up everything.
I think I know what I will be doing Saturday.
Thanks nonetheless to Jephree and townsbg for suggestions. I have to hope that this is a one off event.
Another bit of grasping at straws, I have heard that there is a finite number of times you can install Windows before you need to get permission or something from Microsoft. Could that be the case here?

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Well the only thing I can suggest is a reinstall. What about using the administrator account? What about creating another administrator account and deleting the one you are using?

Not likely. XP is either activated and has full rights or its not and if not eventually you won't be able to use it at all. But thats typically 30 days post install. I think what happens is if you install a certain number of times within a certain period of time [I don't know that specifics] then it doesn't automatically activate online. You'll get a phone number for an automated system. If it has been too many times the system will probably send you to an outsourced operator [so you could really just ignore the system and get switched over anyway] & you'll have to politely tell him/her that this is a reinstall on the same machine and you will get a bunch of numbers to enter into the boxes. You might have to tell the operator a bunch of numbers.

Yeah townsbg,
A reinstall, that was the reason for my despondent reference to what I will be doing Saturday.
I am running one final round of checks with AV including Dr Web, but I don't think it is malware.
Has any one ever told you that you bear a resemblance to one of the Founding fathers?

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

You might want to give Vista a try if you can afford to buy it and have a powerful enough computer.

I don't know if you guessed but thats not really me. You ever see Wolverine? If you have then you'd know who that it.

BTW when I first saw your thread I though that this was just another post on how to hack into a user account which we can't do.

Re: I am the Administrator but get access denied frequently

Thanks for the sugestion, but I will pass on Vista. It is not just the lack of $ but I have only 1gb RAM so I don't think it would work.
Are you saying Wolverine was one of the founding fathers? Wait till Hugh Jackman hears about that storyline!
Seriously though, thanks for your help, hope your weekend is more exciting than mine.
Cheers
