Unhappy I can't access anything on my computer, except Internet Explorer and Media Player! he

I can't download any emails or anything for that matter. A pop up comes on the screen and says, "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". What does that mean? Can anyone help?

Hi ,

Sounds like the account you are using doesn't have full admin priveleges . Does the PC just have the one user account ?

You can change all admin priveleges in control panel .

Click start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage account

If only the one account is set try the following :

Firstly turn off the guest account if it's not in use . Set a new account with full admin priveleges and delete the current admin account . You can transfer all files and settings to the newly created account .

The specific error message can mean either the account in use doesn't have full admin priveleges or the file or device isn't actually present to be accessed ( very rarely the case unless you've deleted something by mistake ) .

Hope that helps .

if you've been able to download in the past your profile maybe corrupted. Try creating a new profile with admin privilages and seeing if you can download whilst logged into that profile. If you can then delete your old profile as it is most likely corrupted.

Even if you didn't have full admin privilages you shoudl still be able to use more than IE & WMP...
