Temp Files

Anyone familiar with these files? I cannot delete them from the Temp folder. There are 5 files that begin with DFF. In both cases, it says that it cannot be deleted because it is being used by another program.

Have you tried deleting them in safe mode Blizey?
They're probably being used by something in the background. Starting in safe mode should stop the program starting.

Thanks Vidster. Actually, I remember trying to delete in safe mode before. Just tried it again and the files "did" delete while in safe mode, but when I return...They are still present in the Temp folder. They are in the Recycle Bin too.

The Perflib_Perfdata_258.dat file did not even show up in the folder, in safe mode. That file is fairly new. I have always had the DFF files.

Windows is running fine...it's just a curiosity really. And, of course, hoping that I don't have some kind of "weirdness" on my computer.

The %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdataxxx.dat files are created by the System Monitor. When you shutdown normally, the file should be deleted.

If you have an abnormal shutdown, these files can become orphaned, and accumulate on your computer.

Under some yet to be determined circumstances, these files can become orphaned during normal operation.

The best way to remove these files is to add a command in a logon script:

del /q %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdata_258.dat

Now that I know what the file is, I realize it is not a big deal. I could just leave it, but I would like to try to get rid of it. I don't really understand the directions though. So, how do I "add a command in a logon script"? Where do I put that file??

Most files in the folder "Temp" that begin with "~" and end with ".tmp" Are placed there by a progam while it is in use. Such as an installer. Lets say you were installing Firefox, it may uncompress its files to the Temp folder while it is installing, then delet them its self when it is done. Also some programs when they run need to put files in the temp folder(looks like what is in your temp folder.) You can download ccleaner, www.ccleaner.com , it gets rid of all the temp files not in use, and some other misalanious unused files.

Hi God Of Computers. 8-)

I just ran across ccleaner last week. It did a very nice job of cleaning things out. As I recall, on the first run it cleaned out aprox. 63MB of unused files and issues. However it did not clean out the files in question.

I ran it with nothing ticked off in the Advanced area. Also, I un-ticked the Run (in Start Menu). What would you suggest in the Advanced area?

Actually, I just had a look at the Advanced area and I'm thinking about just leaving it alone. :-k LOL Thanks for the help!
