Unhappy DVD Installation causes crashes

HI ALL:mrgreen:,
Since installing my Pionneer DV109 unit (DVD +- RW) into my machine ruinning on XP home edition , I have lost all sytem stability.
I get crash aftwer crash when I ask the machine to save or write to either the CD RW that was previously installedand is still there OR No chance at all of DVD writer performing . Yes its in there the machine (Device Manager shows it and I have an icon and seperate drive letters for both )knows its there and they both light up and try to start.

The CDRW will write some small files to CD but not large 125 Mb images etc. The DVD does not want to play !A friend recons i have an ATAPI problem but he doesn't and I don't know how to remedy this. I have changed the drive letter to one that has not been used before . That didn't work. The machine can be left on for a wekend with an image on screen etc and without a scren saver this will still be there days later. Touch the mouse and ZAP it crashes.:bawling:

When it re starts there is no blue screen it just goes straight into windows start up routine.
Help Please this one is driving me Crazy !!!!:eyespop::rofl:

thanks Mike

Have you made sure to check and see if the drive requires DMA, and if it does, do you have it enabled?

In order to enable DMA under Win200/WinXP you need to go at:

- Desktop -> My Computer -> Right Click -> Properties -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary/Secondary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings -> Transfer mode -> Select DMA if available!!!

Its suggested to have already installed the motherboard drivers for chipset, usually that way windows enable DMA automatically. VIA/AMD/ATI based motherboards are suggested to install the latest driver packs in order to over come possible problems!
