cd-rom does not work on laptop PLEASE HELP!

I have a Gateway solo 2150 pentium III processor, 751 MHz, 160 MB RAM 4.52 gig Hard Drive. When I first got the laptop the cd drive worked part of the time but now it does not work at all. The hourglass pops up but then goes away and nothing happens. When I go into My Computer and click on the drive it says "please insert a disk in drive D" and yes there is a disk in it. Is this the cd drive going bad or something else? The laptop is used so there is no warranty.
