Before My Computer sees a disk drive it must be formatted (initialized).

Go to Disk Management and right click the drive and Format.

Disk Management can be found via right clicking My Computer then click Manage then Disk Management.

Just to verify:

It is not detected under either My Computer nor Disk Management?

Any other problems with USB devices?

Is Plug and Play enabled in your Services as well as BIOS?

Also in the BIOS is there a setting for Auto Detect hard drives?

Also are you sure that the external case is compatible with the drive?
