Software wont install, Drivers wont load.

Hello All
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop 5100 P4 2.4 running regularly updated XP SP2, I also have AVG antivirus software.
I recently tried to upgrade some Maptech 16bit software already installed to a bigger version, the software uses Installsheild. Initially I got the autoexec.nt/config.nt fault but after resolving this and retrying, the install still fails. The setup extracts and the main install screen appears breifly, before the whole thing dissapears. The install works fine on other machines and I have run the following. ISFixer, Spybot, Ad-Aware and system mechanic, to no avail.
Also, some drivers will no longer load (Lacie Firewire HD, USB memory sticks) and some new devices wont install at all (Garmin GPS) At the same time other things still work perfectly. When I attach these devices, I get a message saying "There was a problem installing the device", occasionaly it may mention a registry problem.

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
