cannot find driver
hello....
I have recently reformatted my laptop and have installed all of the drivers that were available on the backup disk, but am having a problem with the
standard universal PCI to USB host controller
I have tried all of the options available with troubleshooting, and am getting no where! the thing is the driver works if there is a mass storage device ( mp3 player) in when the computer starts up, but if i take it out it will not recognize it again unless i restart.
I have tried downloading the driver with no luck
I have also tried installing the driver through the add new hardware wizard and manually picked the driver.... also with no luck, there is a msg stating the device cannot start due to code 10. which i do not know.
is there some trick i am missing!? it will not recognise any USB plug ins with the yellow ! in device manager, although 3 others, are ok. I have an acer aspire 3000. with XP proffessional recently put on.
any advice on this would be supreme, as i am starting to get computer rage!:armed:
cheers people.

Code 10
If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Solution button: Update Driver
To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

Check that Plug and Play is enabled and started in your Services: start Run... services.msc
There may also be auto detect and plug and play as well as USB settings in your BIOS Setup.

hey there Jeephre
I have tried all of your suggestions with no luck.
1.Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.
Solution button: Update Driver
driver tries to update and then still comes back with code 10
2.To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.
have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver ... although there was a mention of not being able to find the software.... went in and manually selected the driver to be installed, and chose the location and manufacturor. still coming in code 10
3. Check that Plug and Play is enabled and started in your Services: start Run... services.msc
when i start the computer with the device in and the computer recognises it, it is showing the device as enabled and started, however if i take the device out and plug it back in it will not even power the device from any USB port let alone recognise it.. also it will not recognise a data stick only my mp3 player on start up.. the data stick does notget any recognition at all.
4.There may also be auto detect and plug and play as well as USB settings in your BIOS Setup
I can't locate anything resembling plug and play or USB in BIOS.
it appears to be the USB port itself? the device that is recognised on start up is working fine, installed etc.
do you think reinstalling xp and starting again might be beneficial? I have
I have also tried to download the driver itself. when i run setup nothing really happens.
i hope you got a few more tricks up your sleeve!!
cheers,
