Unhappy Please help me to recover files

Hi there all. Can anyone help me please?

I have been given the task of repairing my brother-in-laws PC. It is an Emachine which self distructed when an ipod was plugged in. The power surge took out the motherboard and the PSU. I have replaced both but as the motherboard is slightly different, you guessed it, it wont boot. The problem I have is that the hard drive contains lots of important information which I need to extract. Using a USB-IDE addaptor I can access the drive OK with my PC, but I cannot see or do anything with the 'My Documents' under the user section as it is all protected. Is there anything I can do to get these files off?
Please let me know if there is.
Thank you all.
