System Restore/Format.

Hello.
My boyfriend is having problems with his computer. He reformatted his computer and restarted. I guess, when you reformat your computer, when you restart..something pops up and you're supposed to click "yes". He did just that, but nothing happened. He went into Safe Mode, too. He also went into BIOS. He's doing everything he can think of to fix the problem, but nothing is working. Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Was XP reinstalled Clean from a Microsoft XP CD?

Or was some manufacturer's recovery process used? e.g. Dell; HP; etc.

Is there any problem accessing the BIOS?

If you find Safe Mode then XP is installed.

Please provide as much detail as possible as to where you are and what is not working.

Well, I'm asking him for more details right now.

He said: "I tried reformating the comp because it was acting kinda funny. When the installation was done, I tried signing in the user account name and a little tab popped up saying " Windows product activation" It asked me if I wanted to activate Microsoft and I clicked yes. Then when it went to the desk top it would automatically log off into the user name selection."

Unless he reinstalled his motherboard drivers do not say yes to activation as it will try to go on-line and you have no drivers to do that.

If he used a Microsoft XP CD then he should have a Driver CD for his motherboard.

If the computer was manufactured e.g. Dell; HP; etc. then he should have a driver CD that came with the computer.

I am usually around about this time or evening US eastern.

During the day I am not.

Anyway after Reinstalling XP you need to install the motherboard drivers which include the drivers to get on-line (LAN).

You do not need to immediately activate XP. Just say no > load the drivers > then go back and activate. It will keep asking you plus there should be a Key icon on the bottom right of the screen. Just click that when you are on-line and ready to activate.

Back tomorrow same time sort of. :takecall:

This board is rather slow these days. Here is our sister board which is more active and you might get other responses if this is an emergency:
