Opening Pictures..

Ok guys i am new to this site so if this post is off place i am sorry...

Question: My friend sent me a picture off a Apple computer. Through Yahoo mail. It was sent correctly but when i try and open it on my computer it doesnt open...i says open from a list of programs.. i picked paint or sumthing and it said it wasnt decoded right and the file type just says FILE... so its not like mpeg. ... although if i open my email off of his apple computer and download the picture it works fine... so i am thinking that i need a program that configures the picture file to end up reading on a windows computer... does that sound right and if so where can i find a program like that.. and ideas would be grateful thanks alot for your time!

What are the extensions of the picture files? e.g. .jpg etc.

Don't know if QuickTime helps here or not.
