I would not disable all components in the start up system; there are lot of things you can get rid of, which need not start at the boot up Having said that there are files which you need at start up.
Things I would leave
1) Virus checker
2) Fire Wall
3) Spyware Checker
4) Window files
Things I would remove
1) Printer files
2) Scanner Files
3) Any Program you installed no included in the above list
Things which eat up memory when makes the PC go slower is

It is always a good idea to keep a quarter of you hard drive clear for windows to use.
I would only remove one or may be two files at a time, making a note of what you remove, and then reboot. If you run into a problem rebooting after removing a file you can, reboot in Safe Mode by tapping F5 at start up then go into Msconfig and un-tick the files.
All files you can remove or replace by ticking or un-ticking that file.
