My computer is freezing at desktop screen?!?

Last night I installed a windows update. It told me I needed to restart my computer. So I did. Worst mistake I have made in a long time!! When I reboot my computer now, it will go all the way through until it gets to the windows desktop screen and then everything freezes. I can work in safe mode, but that is it. I have tried restoring to a previous date, and didnt realize that the option was turned off previously, so the only date it will give me is today. When I try to recover the system with F11, it says I need a restore cd, which I do not have. I have even uninstalled the updates that caused this and it still wont work! Can anyone walk me through how to fix this. My system is an EMachine W3503 and I am running XP media center.
