Question Desktop Background Help Please !

I have had this problem periodically over the years & would appreciate if any one could help me.

I want to change my desktop background to use a .jpg picture file I have already saved to my desktop. I open thew file using "MS Paint" - then from file I hit the tab 'set as background (centered) & I then get a message saying " You must save the file before setting it as a background". Naturally I am somewhat puzzled as I have obviously already saved this file on my desktop. However, even if I save the file with a new name & retry the same process I keep encountering the same problem.

Running Win XP Prof with SP2, but I seem to recall having a similar problem on earlier PC running earlier versions of Windows.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks
