Desktop help

I have managed to lose access to my computer, via the start menu and desktop. Basically I can only access items on my desktop through pressing ctrl, alt, del to go through task manager. Can someone please tell how to get my icons back and start menu back. I have recently changed my desktop picture and can only assume I have done something then. Please help I have been trying for the past 3 hrs to correct it.

debbie,

which version of Windows XP have you got? this is based on that you do have Windows XP. also do you have any of the task bar at the bottom at all, is the clock there? or any of it.

if you put your mouse to the bottom of the screen does the start menu come back up. if you press the Start (flag) button on your keyboard does the start menu appear. if you do not have a Start (flag) button on the keyboard then press Ctrl + Esc and see if the start menu comes up.

If it does then click on the desktop for the start menu to disappear again and then try Start (flag) button + D (this is based on you having this key, it wont work with Ctrl+Esc+D) . and see if your start menu comes back.

Do you still have your original Windows installation CD?

Welcome to techhelpforum.

You could try a System Restore point which is prior to your problem.

There is also this repair tool: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Post back with your results and any further questions.
