Re: update manager

Hi Tony, welcome.

Please explain a bit more what you mean. Is this XP or Vista?

Are you talking about Windows Automatic Updates? If so, you can control what it does and when by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. Then click on the Automatic Update tab. You can disable it, or better yet, set it to notify you but not download or install. Then when updates are released you will be able to review them first and decide which ones you want to install.

If this is not what you mean, please explain, with some details.

Re: update manager

If you want Automatic Updates off and not to be nagged about it, open Control Panel then Security. Click on the link to the lower left that says Change the way Security Center notifies me. Uncheck Automatic Updates. That should do it for you.

Will you use Windows Update from the Start button to do updates then? If not, I'd urge you to reconsider, especially with all the continuing vulnerabilities MS patches every patch Tuesday. Set it to Notify as I suggested then download and install when you want them, or use Windows Update on a monthly basis.

Just my $.02 worth.

Re: update manager

I second Rich's suggestions as if you disable automatic updates your system will be vulnerable!!! Because of its popularity Windows is attacked more than any other OS & for all I know it might have a flaw that makes it more vulnerable, but I don't know that for sure. But it is very important to keep your system updated especially if you have it connected to the internet at all because the bad guys discover a way past the OS kernel's built in security & Microsoft releases a patch to fix it. Not patching your system is like leaving a big hole in a wall of your home. This is my disclaimer on behalf of the forum. You can't say that you haven't been warned & you can not blame us if you are compromised!!!

Re: update manager

townsbg,

I run XP SP2 for quite a while now. ALL auto-updates are turned off. I have loaded ONE update only, the Time Zone update. I run Avast AV & COMODO Firewall. Never had a problem.

Re: update manager

Well I suppose you're lucky but that doesn't mean that no unpatched system will get away with out a compromise. Are you recommending not doing updates?

Re: update manager

"Are you recommending not doing updates?"

No. I'm just stating that I don't update, and have never had a problem. If you have adequate protection in place (AV/Firewall) there should be no problems incurred.

Digerati has stated (in another related thread) that I am not an average user. I agree. However, the fact remains if you run adequate protection, you should experience no problems.
