BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

Hi,

My neighbor brought his pc over he is desperate to get it working again (gateway tower with windows xp) and asked if i could look at it, when it boots up it goes directly to a bsod.

This is the code it gives
0x00000050 (0xc72f3b2c, 0x00000001, 0x80537009,0x00000000)

Tried to boot in safe mode still no luck, asked if he recently did anything (installed software or hardware) said no it was fine yesterday shut down and today nothing but bsod.

I then booted to the debug mode and let that run but it also gave me a bsod.

Asked him for his restore cds and he gave me 1 disc that said recovery dvd, went into bios made cd boot first put it in and about 15 mins later it asked for disc 2 and he said humm i only have that dvd (wth?)..ughh

I did google that code but nothing came up, any ideas what to try next?

Bill

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

The code i get in the above picture is when i try to boot in safe mode, tried booting again (full windows startup vs safe mode) and i got this code

0x0000007E (0x80000003, 0x805c49b8, 0xba4e32b4, oxba4e2fb0)

Googled that code as well but got no results

Asked him to look hard for 2nd recovery cd too...

DVD? Any recovery disk for XP should just be a single CD.

With the disk do you get the option to load the Recovery Console?

If so you might try Check Disk: chkdsk/r

Another possibility is to clear the CMOS. What is the exact Gateway model?

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

The unit is a gateway GT5082 and inside looks darn clean, pulled the cmos battery figure ill let it sit out overnight, do i then reinsert and reboot or reboot without the battery then shut down and reinsert?

Figure can't hurt to try that, the front sticker says Windows XP media edition, (he didn't tell me media edition), the recovery cd is something gateway did F11 and it tells you to insert recovery disc to repair the computer, so i put in that disc - a home made dvdr - so he or whoever setup his pc musta made recovery disc(s) but at about 47% i think it was it spit cd 1 out and said insert cd 2, problem is he said he doesn't think he even has a disc 2 but is still looking.

I do have my windows xp pro disc here (my personal original windows disc not a dell or gateway type disc) would that help at all or would the different versions of windows goof things up if I inserted it to try and repair anything.

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

You can use your XP CD to load the Recovery Console and try Check Disk.

Here is the model:

Gateway Support - 1009053*Gateway GT5082 Media Center Computer

As to the battery reinstall it then reboot and enter the BIOS to set defaults.

You will also need to reset the time and date.

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

Put the battery back in went into bios all looks good, stuck in my windows xp pro disc to get to recovery option, asked me which i wanted to fix
1: min
2: C/windows

I picked 2, then it asks for administrator password, tried just hitting enter but nogo, do i just get his admin password for his master user acct for this?

If so I will call him first thing, he goes out to work pretty early so bet he is in bed by now..

If there is a password you need it here.

If there were no password then "blank" should have worked.

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

Ughh he said he never had to enter a password just started up each day single admin user no passwords windows just started, so I tried (blank) enter again but it doesn't work..

I told him without recovery disc 2, without a admin password, without a physical xp disc (i guess gateway puts the stuff on the hd and the recovery discs do the windows reinstall) I just said you'll need to call gateway for a set of recovery cds (if they even do that) or my suggestion was to go buy xp at a local store (best buy etc if they still even sell it), when does windows 7 come out, maybe that might be better for him. Also recommended a cheap usb external hard drive for backups!

But missing all those pieces to this puzzle as much as I wanna help and have tried different things for him my hands are kinda tied at this point even with the great help here...

All I know is I have my discs passwords etc all stored safe and sound with an external backup drive set to sync every night for my important data (and being paranoid I have hard data dvd copies of most of it too) so I have learned my lesson years ago, time for him to start taking it more serious if he doesn't want to be "out in the cold" nextime this happens.

Also recommended he burns some stuff to disc, and altho not guaranteed even if he did install a new os fresh i think he still might be able to recover a few pics or files using some of the recovery programs that are out there if they mean that much to him.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and ideas but I think even with the best of intentions of trying to help him he is gonna have to learn from this and start taking some steps to at least make sure he has all his stuff in order and or backed up for the next time this happens, and I did tell him it will happen again as we all know it will even to the best of us

Re: BSOD with error code (wont boot in safe mode even)

Windows 7 is released in a few hours. An upgrade for the Home version is @ $120 USD.

If he needs his data you can slave his drive to your computer and access the data.

Did you try the manual from Gateway? There might indeed be a Recovery Partition which your disk was reading as: 1: min

If so there should be a boot hotkey to access it.

F11 and F10 are often used.
